Despite all the preparation and pressure, Apollo 14 was nearly aborted a mere 4 hours, 38 minutes after launch. One of the first maneuvers of the mission was to pull the CSM away from the third stage of the Saturn V system, turn around, dock with the Lunar Module (LM) Antares stored within the Saturn's cargo bay, and pull the joined CSM and LM free of the remains of the rocket. But the automatic docking system failed, and the astronauts were forced to use Kitty Hawk's thrusters to hold the CSM against the LM while Shepard threw the docking switch manually.
During the flight from the Earth to the Moon, Ed Mitchell conducted an unauthorized series of experiments in ESP. As far as I've been able to discover, the results of this test were not conclusive (though some, Ed Mitchell included, have claimed that they were).
